Overview

The American Academy of HIV Medicine is seeking a seasoned communications professional to serve as their Director or Marketing and Communications. This person will oversee all aspects of communications, including to internal healthcare provider audiences and external audiences within the HIV community, including partner organizations, HIV advocates, media and industry. This position is integral to managing the overall brand and reputation of the organization while ensuring consistent outreach to the organization’s membership and credentialed HIV care providers.

General Responsibilities

Overseeing at least one communications staff and collaborating with the talented teams in four other departments to achieve the following scope of work:

Building and executing a comprehensive external, internal and crisis communications strategy that:
Supports the Academy’s vision/mission
Strengthens membership engagement
Enhances the organization’s brand
Developing key messaging and ensuring adherence/alignment to messages across the organization
Developing and managing marketing/communications budgets, deadlines, objectives and schedules
Creating and identifying media opportunities:
Secure coverage for the Academy and its subject-matter experts
Proactively issue press releases on Academy activities and offerings
Respond to breaking HIV news and other relevant events in the media cycle
Providing communications counsel and support to Academy constituents, including: strategic counsel and support for senior Academy leadership; and responding to member communication needs

Highlighting the outstanding work being done within Academy departments (Credentialing, Education, Advocacy and Membership)
Overseeing communications channels, including:
Weekly electronic newsletters
Website; ensuring it is easily navigable, that content is up-to-date and that we are leveraging new technology and best practices appropriately
Podcast
Social media platforms; creating strategies to elevate visibility and grow followers
HIV Specialist, the Academy’s quarterly magazine, for which this position will serve as the Editor-in-Chief
Developing partnerships with like-minded organizations to bring greater offerings to HIV care providers and information that empowers people with HIV
Requirements:

10-15 years marketing and communications experience, including in the healthcare industry
General knowledge of HIV and sexual health
Non-profit, membership-based experience a plus
Leadership skills and the ability to garner buy-in from senior leadership and peers
Excellent project management, time management and communication skills (written and verbal)
Proven track record of pitching and placing earned media
A proven track record of cross-functional partnership and relationship management
A creative thinker and storyteller
Knowledge of best-in-class communications tools, technologies and best practices
Self-starter with the ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities and still meet deadlines

Salary/Benefits:

Excellent health coverage, as well as a dental and vision insurance package, basic life insurance and long-term disability coverage—available at start date of employment (agency pays 100% of employee premium)

11 paid federal holidays with prior day early leave at the discretion of the Executive Director

3 weeks paid leave (2 weeks of vacation; 1 week sick/personal leave)
