Job Title: Climate Campaign Representative
Department: Maryland Chapter
Location: Maryland Chapter office near College Park, MD. (Currently, all staff members are working remotely until COVID-19 protocols allow for in-office work.)
Reports To: Chapter Director

Scope: The Sierra Club seeks a strategic, collaborative, and equity-focused Campaign Representative to advance the Maryland Chapter’s work to reduce Maryland’s climate pollution in an equitable way, with a focus on growing clean energy and building electrification. The Climate Campaign representative will coordinate across Sierra Club and with partners across Maryland to develop and implement local, state, and regional strategies, drive execution, communicate priorities and benchmarks, provide leadership, promote participation, and report on campaign effectiveness.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
Leads the development of a strategic campaign plan, including goals, strategies, and tactical timeline. Implements the state level aspects of a strategic campaign. Coordinates the appropriate national and chapter volunteers, allies and volunteer entities to plan and implement campaigns to achieve results. Reports on progress toward established goals and the effectiveness of campaign strategies.
Implements Sierra Club best practices regarding the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing and justice, equity, and inclusion practices and goals. Designs and implements campaign strategies rooted in an equitable transition to clean energy.
Supports Sierra Club’s power building goals by ensuring campaign strategies and activities are designed to build a base of volunteer leaders and increase and deepen strategic partnerships. Works to ensure that volunteers assume meaningful roles in the campaign work.
Monitors, evaluates, and keeps chapter informed about laws, initiatives and new developments affecting a specific conservation issue at the community, state and national levels.
In collaboration with the team and external partners, develops policy positions and advocates before decision-makers. Cultivates productive relationships and represents the Sierra Club with key decision-makers and coalitions. Provides technical policy, and guidance and support to staff, volunteers, and partner organizations. Writes, edits, and reviews educational and advocacy materials.
Works on task forces, committees, coalitions, etc. representing the Club’s objective or mission.
Handles miscellaneous projects and duties as assigned by the Chapter.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
· Experience in policy analysis and development of advocacy campaigns. Comfortable analyzing and communicating complex policy, legislation, and legal documents in the area of climate change, electric generation, and building electrification. Foundational understanding in climate science and climate policy. Comfortable with the fundamentals of climate change science and common policy approaches, competent with language, basics of the electricity sector. Skilled in quickly digesting and summarizing material and in communicating with technical and lay audiences.
· Communicates well both orally and in writing. Produces compelling written and digital materials: Aims for accuracy and attention to detail. Can learn, internalize, and incorporate our “voice” across platforms. Organizes and shares information effectively — whether writing an internal email or delivering a presentation.” Highly developed written and oral communication skills, with a focus on communicating effectively across different groups of diverse stakeholders. Demonstrated ease communicating complex policies to diverse groups including staff, volunteers, funders, decision makers and external partners. Demonstrated public speaking and media presentation ability.
· Experience and skills managing meetings, developing clear agendas and moving a group towards equitable and time bound decisions. Ability to proactively communicate to resolve tensions within a team. Demonstrated track record of communication in a timely, respectful manner during times of conflict and stress.
· Demonstrated ability to work under their own initiative, handle multiple assignments simultaneously, and manage projects to completion.
· Equity Analysis and Practice. You are aware of your group identities and how they have shaped your life and experiences at work. You have an analysis of how racism and other forms of oppression in society impact relationships, systems and culture. You bring experience and skills for working effectively with colleagues across group identities and position/role. Effective in empowering and engaging both with staff and non-staff volunteers.
The strongest candidates will also demonstrate the following experience, skills and competencies:
· Experience effectively navigating complex organizational systems, structures and dynamics and proactively problem solving in a campaign-oriented environment. Demonstrated track record of strong organizational skills and ability to work effectively with ambiguity and change. Is a consensus builder when possible and strives for transparent and equitable, timebound processes that arrive at strategic decisions.
· Knowledge and advocacy experience in Maryland a plus. This includes: knowledge of Maryland geography and ecology; experience with advocacy campaigning, knowledge of Maryland advocacy community; familiarity with Maryland politics, legislature, and power structures.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is $65,000 – $75,000, non-negotiable.
This position is represented by a collective bargaining unit and is subject to the terms and conditions of the contract between Sierra Club and Progressive Workers Union.

This is a category #5 exempt, represented, position.
