We drive rapid-response campaigns at scale on a multitude of key issues at high-impact moments while building sustainable campaigns that resonate and grow over time. Whether its democracy, health care, foreign policy, economic justice, immigration or otherwise, MoveOn provides our members with timely ways to take action for change.
The Managing Director of Analytics is responsible for leading a team of data scientists, data visualization experts, and analysts who perform analytics work in support of MoveOn’s organizational goals.
Responsibilities include:
Setting strategic plans and goals for the analytics team, including longer-term vision.
Setting and reevaluating team priorities on an ongoing basis.
Presenting the team’s work and lifting up challenges to the senior management team.
Creating and managing the team budget.
Directly managing 3-5 analysts and data scientists.
Hiring, training, and coaching new analysts.
Fostering team culture and equity.
Coordinating with cross-organizational teams to identify, design, and deploy analytics-based tactics that support MoveOn’s objectives.
Conducting analyses, running experiments, developing models, creating dashboards, and performing other analytics work.
Supporting and promoting experimentation and data-driven work across the organization.
To be a successful candidate, you will:
Have experience working in data science or data analytics and statistics, specifically with large databases.
Be passionate about using analytics to drive progressive change.
Be a good decision-maker. You don’t have to make all of the decisions, but you need to make sure that decisions are being made when necessary and that the decision-making process and outcomes are clearly communicated to the people whose work is impacted.
Have experience in management, mentoring, or leading large-scale projects, and take your management responsibilities seriously. The coaching, support, and decision-making you do for the team are as important as any individual analytics contributions.
Be a good communicator. The analysis work you and the team conduct will help inform programmatic decisions for other teams across MoveOn. Being able to communicate complex analytics results to nontechnical audiences is critical to maximizing the impact of the team’s work.
Be committed to the democratization of data and analytics by providing training and tools that increase staff’s direct access to data and information about their work. Equip them to run and analyze experiments without requiring analytics team engagement.
Be aware of data and analytics limitations. The data that forms the foundation of much of our analysis often has inherent biases that disproportionately impact marginalized or underrepresented populations. Being aware of and mitigating these biases when possible is important to helping ensure that we aren’t leaving people out or exacerbating biases when implementing results in our programs. Recognize when the usefulness of analytics is limited and where decisions should be data-informed rather than data-driven.
Requirements:
5+ years experience conducting analytics, preferably in a political setting.
Solid understanding of experimental design and randomized controlled trials.
3+ years experience working with large data sets using coding-based statistical software such as R, Python, or SAS.
3+ years management or leadership experience, preferably leading teams of analysts.
Experience developing strategic plans and making prioritization decisions for a team or large-scale project.
Ability to communicate technical results to a nontechnical audience.

Classification, Salary, and Benefits:
At MoveOn, we commit to equity in our compensation philosophy and practices. We are committed to equal pay for equal work. To counter systemic compensation issues in this country and pay inequality, we have a nonnegotiable compensation practice. We utilize benchmarking and peer organization data to ensure we provide competitive nonprofit compensation and benefits. The annual salary for this position is $154,000. In addition to the base salary, we offer a monthly home office subsidy. We also offer an internet and phone subsidy of $2,100 annually and a health and wellness subsidy of $900 annually. All of these cash benefits are added to your bimonthly paycheck. We offer strong medical, dental, and vision benefits, which are free to employees and children of employees (spouses or domestic partners can be added at a subsidized rate). We offer employer-paid premiums for life insurance; 4 weeks accrued paid vacation time per year, prorated for the period that you work; 18 weeks of paid parental leave (birth, adoption, foster care placement of a child), 10 days accrued paid sick time prorated for the period that you work; paid family medical leave; and 8 staff holidays and 6 floating holidays (annually). We also offer a $1000 in professional development budget each year for each staff member.
