Overview

The Endangered Species Coalition is seeking a Field Representative in Colorado to help develop, run, and win local and national campaigns to defend our endangered species. Colorado is a special state with unique geography that provides both amazing outdoor recreation opportunities, and unique wildlife habitat. Colorado is home to about 35 listed endangered species. With the presence of people and industry comes challenges for wildlife and habitat destruction.

The Colorado Field Representative will engage with ESC member groups, allies, the public, elected officials, media, and frontline communities on regional endangered species issues and national Endangered Species Act defense efforts.

The Colorado Field Representative will engage stakeholders in campaign activities including formulating campaign strategies, work plans and timelines, grassroots and grass-tops organizing, public education, media relations, political engagement, and fundraising.

The ideal candidate will be high-energy, strategic, proactive, self-aware, and able to execute campaign strategies. Good judgment and self-motivation are a must, and a sense of humor is a plus. Knowledge of wildlife issues is helpful, as is the ability to quickly learn the intricacies of regional issues and the various players. While you need not be a policy expert, you do need to have a passion for wildlife and politics. A compelling candidate will have strong ties with local communities. The Colorado Field Representative will report to the National Director of Field Campaigns.

This position is remote and may be located anywhere in Colorado.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Work Experience and Education

  • 2-5 years in advocacy campaigning, preferably with experience in grassroots organizing, social justice or wildlife conservation.
  • Demonstrated experience leading campaigns, meeting with decision makers, and working with coalitions, activists, and volunteers is ideal.
  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in political science, environmental science or equivalent work or educational experience.

Knowledge

  • Some familiarity with legislative processes, particularly with environmental laws.
  • Awareness of and interest in endangered species, environmental justice, wolves and/or politics in Colorado.
  • A strong commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Abilities & Skills

Ability to:

  • Work independently on multiple projects and in a fast-paced, changing environment.
  • Work remotely, via email, video, and conference calls.
  • Build and maintain strong interpersonal relationships with people from diverse political and social backgrounds.
  • Work collaboratively with ESC staff and within various coalitions.
  • Communicate effectively with the community, reporters, and with people of diverse backgrounds through public presentations, interviews, etc.

Skilled in:

  • High-level writing and speaking.
  • Creativity, problem-solving, and strategic thinking.
  • Cultural awareness—working equitably and inclusively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Self-awareness and understanding of how one works best.
  • Functional competency with basic Microsoft software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google products (Gmail, Drive, Calendar).

Work Environment

  • Occasional night and weekend work required.
  • Travel within Colorado—occasional travel outside of the state.

Primary Tasks and Areas of Responsibility

  • Conceive and implement tactics to support ESC’s policy goals: advancing state habitat and species protections and defending the Endangered Species Act.
  • Work with Colorado conservation partners, activists, and member groups on successful implementation of Colorado Proposition 114–the reintroduction of wolves to the state.
  • Build a strong movement for endangered wildlife by mobilizing the grassroots.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers.
  • Cultivate spokespeople from various constituencies (e.g., sportsmen & women, business owners, landowners, and others), and
  • Inform and engage with state and local groups on campaign tactics.
  • Build relationships with key elected officials, policymakers, and local community leaders.
  • Be a spokesperson for the ESC within the community:
  • Lead and represent ESC in state-level policy and campaign conversations and meetings.
  • Implement online campaigns.
  • Give educational presentations to the public on wildlife issues and current legislation, and
  • Cultivate relationships with the local media.
  • Support fundraising to grow ESC’s work on these issues.
  • Perform other related duties, as they come up, to serve and protect wildlife.
  • Participate in all ESC-wide activities and campaigns.

Salary Range: $45,000 – $52,000
