Overview
Cheshire Law Group is expanding its legal team to add an experienced part-time (up to 25 hours/week) Nonprofit Law Attorney. No existing book of business is required.
Cheshire Law Group is a woman-owned law firm that exclusively represents nonprofit organizations as general counsel. Attorneys on the Firm’s legal team work with nonprofit organizations to become trusted advisors and to provide expert counsel on a wide variety of legal matters. This role is ideal for an exceptional attorney who is passionate about representing nonprofit organizations and who enjoys working independently to manage client matters, but who also appreciates collaboration with colleagues. The ideal candidate is driven by the desire to always meet clients’ needs in a positive, thoughtful, and thorough manner, and who enjoys working directly with leaders in the nonprofit sector to help develop cost-efficient solutions on legal matters. Please note that this position offers flexibility and may be remote, hybrid, or in-person. Should the part-time option be chosen, this position also offers the possibility of expanding to full-time status in the future depending upon client needs, demonstrated abilities, and work performance.
Responsibilities
Provide legal assistance and support nonprofit organization clients:
· Review, draft, revise, and finalize a wide variety of documents including contracts, grant agreements, policies, leases, registrations, resolutions, tax, and corporate forms
· Research tax and other federal, state, and local laws such as lobbying, charitable solicitation, and governance matters
· Review and carefully analyze documents in preparation for mergers and other repositioning matters
· Draft memoranda to document findings
· Translate complex legal issues into understandable concepts using charts or visual aids
Client Management:
· Support and/or manage projects and execute required work with little or no supervision
· Communicate directly with clients and manage client project timeline and budget expectations
· Monitor legal and compliance issues and client news/events, keeping up with industry trends
· Collaborate with the Firm’s team and with outside counsel as needed
Requirements
· JD degree required
· Licensed to practice law in the US and must be in good standing
· Licensed to practice law in PA mandatory (or eligible to waive into the Pennsylvania bar), with additional NJ license preferred and other state licenses (e.g., NY, MD, District of Columbia) a plus
· Minimum 3+ years of relevant law experience
· Strong demonstrated interest in and experience serving nonprofits a must (pro bono service, board service, volunteerism, and/or working with underserved clients or communities)
· Nonprofit law, tax law, and/or corporate law experience a must, with a focus on corporate transactional law, complex corporate contracts, and agreements; familiarity with federal and/or state/local taxation is a plus
· Excellent written and oral communications, research, editing, analytical, and negotiating skills; strong attention to detail
