Overview
Employment Status: This is a grant-funded position. Full-time termed, employee with benefits (40 hours per week) through December 31, 2024; with the possibility of extension.
Location: This is a remote position. We are a California-based organization, and this individual will be expected to work flexibly between Pacific and Eastern time zones as needed.
Compensation Range: $120,000 – $135,000, determined by organizational equity, experience and qualifications.

Position Overview
Cultural Power is looking for a passionate and growth-oriented Director of Field Building. The Director of Field Building will work closely with the Chief Field Building Officer and the entire Constellations team, overseeing the advancement of the Constellations Culture Change Fund & Initiative, our key Field Building initiative. This role will specifically oversee and manage project budgets, editorial communications and storytelling, learning and impact and initiative-wide direct programming. This is a role for someone with experience managing successful programs, weaving networks, and measuring impact from a research justice lens. This person should have experience centering traditional and tradition-based Culture Bearers in their work and should demonstrate an understanding of the power of narrative and cultural strategy to accelerate a shift in worldview from domination to liberation, collaboration, care and interdependence.
The Director of Field Building will build strong relationships with our staff, fellows and network members, drawing on excellent interpersonal skills and a deep commitment to our mission. This position serves as a member of the Leadership Team, composed of C-Suite and Director-level staff leading specific departments. The Director of Field BuildingBuidling will report to the Chief Field Building Officer and will manage a staff team from one to three, in addition to contractors.
Primary Responsibilities:
Leadership & Strategy
Act as a strategic thought partner to the CFBO ensuring alignment and adherence with organizational and departmental strategy, plans and budgets.
Update department goals in alignment with the organizational goals and strategic plan.
Identify new opportunities, participate in go/no goes with an eye toward long-term depth and breadth, and staff capacity.
Lead in designing and implementing processes to weave together and share learnings and stories of impacts across the Constellations strategies and accompanying programs, in close consultation with our evaluation consultants, ORS Impact.
Lead external communications and visibility of Constellations to advance field learning on narrative and cultural strategies, including writing key editorial content such as newsletters, press releases, op-eds, articles, speaking notes, briefings, LinkedIn posts and other materials as needed with input from the Constellations team and Cultural Power’s Communications Team.
Manage and track grant deliverables and budgets, support the drafting and development of donor proposals and reports with input from the Constellations team and Cultural Power’s Development and Finance Teams.
Provide in-depth, strategic input and support the delivery of Constellations programs including the Fellowship and Narrative Design lab.
Partner with the Leadership Team on building a vibrant organizational culture with a clear lens towards change management.
Foster and encourage a spirit of creativity, initiative and solutions-orientation.
Serve as an ambassador for the organization at conferences, workshops, events, and meetings, as needed.
Project Management
Establish and execute processes to support program staff in the development of tactical workplans that are in support of overall field building goals in collaboration with Constellations Senior Program Operations Manager.
Identify and implement opportunities for ethical, accountable, and supportive first-person storytelling and impact sharing from Constellations network members.
Review, manage and maintain the Constellations’ communications plan, Comet Pitch, slide deck, calendar of opportunities and other high level strategic visibility documents.
Write templates for Constellations network members to easily communicate about the initiative on social media and other platforms, as needed.
Oversee and direct network event production which includes but is not limited to content and deck creation, presenter speaking notes, logistics and facilitation, with support from the Senior Program Operations Manager and the Communications team and/or contractors for delivery of tailored assets.
Develop and implement annual program budgets, budget re-forecasting, expense tracking, and support funder proposals and reports as needed with input from the Constellations team and Cultural Power’s Finance Team.
Maintain team records in Salesforce, including running reports.
Manage of special and emergent field building projects.
Other duties as required to support and fulfill the Constellations mandate.
Staff Management
Support the CFBO in fostering team culture that embodies organizational values and Cultural Power and Constellations’ narratives through participation in staff and program meetings, training, and/or retreats.
Supervise between one to three Constellations team members, update job descriptions, approve expense reports and Gusto requests, conduct performance reviews and provide coaching.
Oversee all contractors in collaboration with Constellations Senior Program Operations Manager ensuring there are clear scopes of work, including specific deliverables, that adhere to timelines and budget.
Lead team strategy and planning meetings/retreats to ensure all Field Building programs align with the organization’s strategic priorities.
Ensure that organizational and team values, norms and protocols are followed to foster a collaborative environment.
Qualifications:
Direct lived experience as a BIPOC and/or LGBTQI grassroots activist, advocate, artist, creative, disruptor, educator, facilitator or/and movement builder, etc. in your own community, with a strong preference for lived experience as a traditional and/or tradition-based Culture Bearer.
Excitement to join a new emergent initiative and cross-team effort that requires iteration, flexibility and a collaborative spirit as we build and learn together.
At least 5-7 years of leadership and program management experience, preferably in a values-based and/or social justice-led organization.
At least 3-5 years of government program grant and budget management experience with solid program evaluation and impact experience.
Excellent management skills and attention to detail, with demonstrated experience prioritizing competing projects and multi-tasking across a broad spectrum of collaborators, working remotely and across different time zones.
Demonstrated ability to write compelling content for diverse audiences that weaves programmatic connective tissue for learning, experimentation and visibility.
Ability to use creativity and innovation to summarize data-driven analytics in narrative reports that are compelling, comprehensible and interesting for diverse audiences, including funders.
Previous experience tracking lessons and innovations across a set of complex programs with and for a diverse set of stakeholders and audiences.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills including deep listening, with the ability to develop solid working relationships with an appreciation for varying viewpoints and styles in a culturally diverse environment.
Understanding of intersectional feminisms, social justice, and human rights issues facing BIPOC and LGBTQI people in the US.
Oral and written fluency in English, with additional proficiency in an Indigenous language preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
The position is full-time with a salary range of $120,000- $135,000, determined by organizational equity, experience and qualifications.
