High Country News is looking for a major gifts officer to join our dedicated team of fundraisers. This individual will drive donor discovery, donor cultivation and the acquisition of high-level gifts and planned gifts.

The Charitable Gifts Advisor takes responsibility for meeting annual fundraising goals and communicates a passion for High Country News’ mission and values. The ideal candidate will possess a thorough knowledge of fundraising techniques. We are looking for someone with considerable experience in a fundraising role with a focus on donor relations and individual donor stewardship.

The Charitable Gifts Advisor will work under the general direction of the Director of Philanthropy, and duties will include:

·         Responsible for meeting annual fundraising goals through major gifts solicitation

·         Managers a case load of around 250 donors and prospects

·         Cultivates authentic donor relationships through personal visits, phone calls, video meetings, and mailed and email correspondence

·         Creates custom donor plans and donor offers

·         Plans regional trips to meet with major donors in person, occasionally including the Executive Director, board members or an editorial staff member

·         Researches and helps identify potential major donors among donor base; implements strategies for reaching prospects and increasing their giving over time

·         Maintains donor records, strategies and donor “touches” in Salesforce

·         Helps create and disseminates regular major donor reports

·         Coordinates with the Director of Philanthropy to provide thank-you notes and gifts

·         Assists in planning major donor cultivation events

·         Meets regularly with the Director of Philanthropy to review donor strategies

Skills and experience:

We’re most interested in hearing how your own skills, broader experience and qualifications would enhance the role and benefit HCN and the communities we serve and hope to serve across the West. You should have an understanding of and passion for High Country News’ mission to inform and inspire people to take action on behalf of the West’s natural and human communities.

The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to talk easily with donors, write compelling copy and create individualized donor reports and regular written correspondence. You should be able to show relevant experience in articulating diversity goals to potential donors.

Candidates should possess highly developed interpersonal and organizational skills. A proficiency in Microsoft Office, with a working knowledge of Salesforce or other customer relationship management software is an advantage.

Compensation and general terms:

This is a full-time, exempt position with medical, dental, and vision healthcare benefits; paid vacation leave starting at 12 days a year plus 9 HCN paid holiday days each year; paid sick and family leave benefits; a monthly remote work stipend and IT start-up stipend; and a salary in the range of $67,590 to $75,100 annual equivalent, dependent on skills and experience.

This is a remote role that requires periodic visits to HCN’s offices in Paonia, Colorado. Candidates must have access to a major airport and be able to travel to meet with major donors in person and attend occasional events in the Intermountain West or West Coast. High Country News’ marketing, fundraising and editorial teams are dispersed across the Western states of Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming. The Charitable Gifts Advisor should either live in the West or be willing to relocate to the region.
