Organization: American Academy of HIV Medicine

Location: Office is located in Washington, DC but the position is for a fully remote FTE

Travel: Occasional, Domestic

Salary: Commensurate with Experience; starting at $83,000.00 gross/yearly

Ideal Start Date: As soon as possible but by October 1, 2023

 

Position Details:

 

The Director of Public Policy is responsible for monitoring and reporting on policy developments on a diversity of topics affecting our membership in a fast-paced legislative and regulatory environment.

 

The Director of Public Policy leads the organization’s policy and advocacy activities at both the federal and state levels. The duties of the position include:

  • Representing the interests and positions of HIV clinicians and HIV patients to federal officials, the Administration, Congress, governors, and state and other health officials.
  • Drafting position statements, regulatory comments, public letters, bi-monthly policy articles, website content and hosting webinars.
  • Staffing the Academy’s clinician-led Public Policy Committee to craft policy positions and propose policy agendas and strategies.
  • Collaborating with and supporting clinicians in regional and state chapters on policy efforts and initiatives in states.
  • Informing the Academy’s membership of political and policy developments in the realm of HIV prevention and care.
  • Organizing efforts to recommend policy positions to the National Board and providing briefings on current issues at Board Meetings.
  • Leading the organization’s engagement with external allies and partner organizations in the policy realm.

 

Requirements:

  • Candidate must have excellent writing skills and the ability to communicate complicated issues clearly and effectively.
  • Candidate should have proven experience with domestic federal and state policy analysis.
  • Ideal candidate will have knowledge of workings of Congress, health committees, federal health agencies and Administration officials. Working knowledge of state legislatures, state Medicaid programs, ADAPs, and other funding mechanisms preferred.
  • Must be able to work effectively with a broad range of partner organizations and stakeholders.
  • Must be able to represent organization’s positions to a broad constituency. Adept at handling multiple priorities simultaneously and working quickly and effectively to accomplish evolving and ongoing goals.
  • Candidate must be able to successfully collaborate with colleagues each working remotely, while also have a proven ability to work independently. The Academy staff is small, so a collaborative spirit is critical.
  • Candidate should have knowledge of or lived experience with centering equity, diversity and justice principles within policy work, or be open to learning as the Academy continues to prioritize organizational improvements.
  • Knowledge of and background in HIV (and/or other infectious disease) and its unique policy landscape strongly preferred. Candidates with experience working with, and representing the interests of, medical providers will also be given strong preference. Candidates must be comfortable working with a diverse constituency and people with or at risk for HIV and their medical providers.
  • Knowledge of broad health policy issues preferred, including: the Affordable Care Act, medication access and health coverage issues, Medicaid and Medicare, the Ryan White Program, quality of care issues, public health and epidemiology.
  • Minimum three to five years of experience in health policy.
  • Master’s Degree preferred in public health or other related field, but health policy-related experience may be substituted.
  • Residency in the greater Washington, DC metropolitan area or willingness to relocate.
