OVERVIEW
As You Sow is a Berkeley-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1992 that promotes corporate environmental and social responsibility through shareholder advocacy, coalition building, and innovative legal strategies. We believe that the path to a safe, just, and sustainable world for all can be achieved by moving corporations to take greater responsibility for the impact of their actions, particularly in their environmental, social, and governance policies and practices. Doing so reduces risk for companies and harm to stakeholders. We achieve these goals through direct engagement, shareholder advocacy, research, publishing scorecards, and other innovative and legal actions. Here is one example.

THE POSITION
As You Sow’s Climate and Energy Program works to make a positive change in the world by moving companies to make progress on climate change. In this leading role, you will have an opportunity to work with As You Sow to shift publicly-traded companies to address these critical climate-related issues as a researcher and shareholder advocate.

As an Associate, you will support As You Sow’s Climate & Energy program in working to embed climate action throughout the full range of companies’ operational planning and disclosures. Work will include research on corporate policies and practices, climate regulations, corporate governance and risk management, and company financials. Issue areas include oil and gas emissions, financed emissions in the banking and industry sectors, offsets, low carbon technologies, and greenhouse gas measurement and management, among others. The Associate will also participate in company dialogues, report drafting, press release drafting, etc. Through this relationship, you will gain insight into the nexus of climate and business and obtain a greater understanding of shareholder advocacy and how this can change the world.

Reports to: Climate & Energy Program Manager (Abigail Paris)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Research and writing of memos, briefs, reports, blogs, and press releases on topics relating to climate change and energy issues, from both a financial and sustainability lens.
Assess company practices and disclosures (financial and sustainability).
Collaborate with NGOs, faith-based investors, and institutional investors.
Monitor media, analyst reports, online postings, and other information sources.
Prepare for and participate in company dialogues and negotiations.
Assist with shareholder resolution process as needed, including research and writing of resolutions, proxy memos, responses to company no-action requests.
Potential opportunities to speak at conferences and corporate annual meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS
Must demonstrate strong commitment to corporate responsibility issues.
Prefer significant experience in ESG issues.
Strong interpersonal engagement and communication skills.
Excellent research, analysis, and writing skills.
Ability to work as part of a team, as well as to take individual initiative.
Strong analytical skills and familiarity with databases and online research.
Organizational and time management skills, with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks.
Personal commitment to progressive social and environmental change.
Strong work ethic, self-motivated, and commitment to excellence.
Sense of humor appreciated.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM US
Salary: $65,000 to $69,000
