OVERVIEW As You Sow is a Berkeley-based non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1992. We believe that the path to a safe, just, and sustainable world for all can be achieved by moving corporations to take greater responsibility for the impact of their actions, particularly in their environmental, social, and governance policies and practices. Doing so reduces risk for companies and harm to stakeholders. We achieve these goals through direct engagement, shareholder advocacy, research, publishing scorecards, and other innovative and legal actions. Here is one example.

THE POSITION – Would you like to help move the needle on Racial Justice? The Racial Justice Research Fellow supports the Racial and Environmental Justice Manager with a variety of data management projects and tasks in the Initiative process. The Initiative has developed Racial Justice Scorecards on the Large Cap 3000, which rank companies on 27 key performance indicators (KPIs) related to racial equity, DEI, and environmental justice.

 

Your work will include researching corporate actions on racial justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and environmental justice. You will also find and analyze public information on companies in the Large Cap 3000, corporate reports, metrics and programs. This is a part-time position; the amount of time and intensity of the work will vary throughout the year. This position is remote.

 

Start date: August 12th, 2024 (Flexible)

End Date: March 21st, 2025 (Flexible)

Reports to: Racial and Environmental Justice Manager & the Racial Justice Research Senior Associate

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

· Data management in Excel: consolidating, organizing, and analyzing large data sets based on corporate actions

· Conduct in-depth detailed research: Interest and ability to research public company information based on KPIs

· Minimum weekly commitment of 10 hours

· Mandatory weekly half hour 1-1 check-in meetings with the Racial Justice team

· General availability for additional meetings if necessary

 

QUALIFICATIONS

· Foundational knowledge of social and racial justice movements and environmental justice frameworks

· Interest in corporate environmental, social, governance (ESG) performance monitoring

· Time management skills to meet concrete due dates and to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment

· Motivation to conduct independent research with and without firm due dates

· Excellent attention to detail and pride in excellent data management/data hygiene

· Proficiency in Word, Excel, and email required.

· Access to Microsoft office (Word, Excel) preferred

· Ability and experience following a detailed research methodology with high stakes outcomes

· Ability to follow templates and proofread documents accurately

· Ability to notice mistakes and question whether something is correct that looks off

· Ability to work individually as well as in a team setting

· Ability to respond positively towards constructive feedback

· This is a part-time contract position, each company researched is $15, consultants are expected to research ~500 companies (at about 30mins/ company) by March 21, 2025
