Overview

The Consortium of Universities for the Advancement of Hydrologic Science, Inc. (CUAHSI) is hiring an early/mid-career Research Software Engineer to join our team. This is a remote position with the option of working in our Arlington MA office. Occasional travel is expected for in-person collaboration, team building activities, and strategic planning.

The Research Software Engineer is an active member of an interdisciplinary research team consisting of research scientists and software engineers. Successful candidates will engage in the design, development, and communication of software to support research and education in the water sciences. Primary activities will focus on establishing innovative cloud solutions for earth surface data archival, facilitating hydrologic model simulations, and providing community cloud computing. The Research Software Engineer will provide technical support and general knowledge of CUAHSI services to both internal and external parties, and communicate project requirements, designs, and results to technical audiences

Essential Job Functions

  • Works with both CUAHSI technical staff and external partners to develop software and tools to support hydrologic modeling, data analysis, scientific cloud computing, and earth surface data archival.
  • Builds, optimizes, and maintains complex software applications using a variety of programming techniques and technologies.
  • Collaborates with water scientists and engineers to design, build, and maintain applications; assisting with all aspects of software design and coding, including code reviews and software testing.
  • Utilizes creativity and innovation to independently solve problems raised by cutting-edge water research.
  • Provides technical and industry expertise to the internal CUAHSI team as well as outside collaborators.

Non-Essential Job Functions

  • Occasional travel within the United States to participate in CUAHSI meetings, events, and team building activities.

Required Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of Science in software engineering, computer science, or an equivalent technical degree with demonstrable skills.
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (Python preferred).
  • Ability to communicate with diverse audiences in both written and verbal forms.
  • Analytical and complex problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and self-teach.
  • Ability to adapt to emerging technologies and develop new skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure and/or expertise in hydrology and related disciplines in the Earth sciences.
  • Experience with front-end web development using modern frameworks such as React, Angular, Vue, etc.
  • Experience with software containerization, e.g. Docker, Singularity.
  • Experience developing software that runs on Linux operating systems.
  • Experience developing and deploying software in commercial cloud environments (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services).
