We are seeking a passionate and seasoned communications professional ready to lead the organization’s efforts to communicate the intersectional community and environmental impacts of mineral and energy extraction. The Strategic Communications Director will report to the Executive Director and will join our Senior Leadership Team, with a primary responsibility to maintain Earthworks role as a trusted and innovative leader in efforts to confront extractive industries and build community power.

Strategy Development

  • Work with the Executive Director and senior leadership to create and implement an organizational messaging and branding strategy that emphasizes and accentuates Earthworks’ strategic priorities and DEI Commitments
  • Lead Earthworks’ efforts around communications, branding, storytelling and messaging that elevates frontline voices and honors the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing
  • Develop, execute, and evaluate strategies that raise the profile of our program priorities and our organization with key audiences
  • Oversee Communications team’s work with Program Directors and staff to develop communications plans, program plans, campaign initiatives, and evaluation and learning with respect to all three.
  • Collaborate with Philanthropy Director and Team to develop supporter fundraising strategies and to ensure effective communications and branding around Earthworks public-facing fundraising efforts

Communications Systems and Media Relations

  • Oversee development and maintenance of press contacts and relationships in order to ensure regular, nationwide, global and high-impact media coverage
  • Oversee development of communications plan for Earthworks campaigns
  • In recognition that environmental burdens disproportionately impact Black, brown and Indigenous communities, develop communication strategies for Earthworks campaigns that reflect these disparities and advance recognition of frontline community impacts and resistance
  • Support communications skills training for program staff and community allies
  • Oversee communications staff’s development of press materials (messaging guides, press releases, statements, and media advisories)
  • Manage opinion media engagement, including editorial board outreach and opinion editorial drafting/submitting. Review materials as appropriate to ensure the highest standards of quality
  • With the Information Systems director, oversee communications systems of press contacts and database of news coverage that mentions Earthworks, our partners, or advances ours or our partners’ narratives
  • Work with Communications staff to regularly measure and analyze our impact and report on it to the Executive Director and Board of Directors

Digital Communications

  • In collaboration with Philanthropy and Program teams, supervise the Digital Team to ensure that Earthworks’ website, blog and advocacy platforms are maintained to serve the needs of our core constituencies, and that our online supporters are cultivated and engaged for activism and fundraising.
  • Oversee the Digital Team’s establishment of goals for increasing online communications success and regularly measure, analyze and report progress towards those goals to the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Oversee the Digital Team’s development of strategies for maximizing the potential of a dynamic social media ecosystem’s increasing opinion-making authority to create and shape narratives in service of our programmatic goals.
  • Oversee the Digital Team’s collaboration with program staff to develop engagement strategy for Earthworks supporters to advance program and organizational goals.


  • Hire, manage and oversee Communications staff, including the Digital Team, ensuring that the team is working towards work plan goals, strategies and DEI commitments
  • Manage consultants and vendors to cover activities beyond the capacity of staff
  • Oversee internal communications within the Communications Team and support the development and implementation of organizational systems, processes and budget with the Leadership Team
  • Work with the Philanthropy team and program staff to support fundraising efforts
  • Ensure that Communications Team members are operating according to Earthworks’ personnel policies and are effectively supported and supervised
  • Work with the Leadership team to support a healthy internal working environment at Earthworks, including actively and constantly working to dismantle racism and other systems of oppression
  • Provide support and mentorship to staff to ensure that the Communications team is fulfilling our organizational DEI commitments, including practicing  the Jemez Principles for Democratic Organizing internally and in our communications work


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience with social media and digital communication platforms
  • Effective narrative-building and storytelling skills that elevate the voices of those most immediately affected
  • Enthusiasm for developing communications strategies for a fast-paced and growing organization
  • At least 10 years of experience in communications and a proven track record leading and managing a dynamic team and collaborating with in-house experts and external partners
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and in collaboration with others, anticipate and solve problems, and make sound recommendations for improvements
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and juggle a fast-paced work environment while serving as a caring and compassionate leader

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range for this position is $125,000-$147,000 annually depending on experience. Earthworks provides full-time staff with a competitive package of benefits, including medical, vision, and dental insurance, and paid parental leave.
