Flexible Location, USA based. Remote work with travel required for this position on average 5-10 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally.
Compensation: $68,450-$82,950, commensurate with experience, skill and need. Salaries are determined using a values-based salary calculator that factors an employee’s need, experience and responsibilities including traditionally invisible labor. This position is full-time with potential for long term based on evaluation after a 3 month introductory period. 100% of benefits are employer-covered including medical, dental, vision and life insurance beginning on the first month after date of hire; 50% child medical insurance benefit available. 401K after one year of employment. Position Summary: This position will lead Communications Strategy for the alliance, lead the Communications team and supervise communications staff, elevate the visibility of alliance leadership and members nationally and internationally, support the leadership of member groups playing communications roles in programs, and coordinate with our allies. This position will report to the Co-Deputy Director, Organizational Strategy. This position is a cost-shared position with GGJ Action Fund (GGJAF), GGJ’s sibling 501c4 organization.
Lead narrative strategy and communications plans (30%)
- Craft organizational communications strategy for GGJ and GGJ Action Fund
- Create and regularly update communications strategy according to organizational priorities, with defined outcomes and activities
- Work closely with Organizing Director and Organizing Team to craft communications strategy in line with political and organizing strategy
- Edit communications written by staff or contractors to ensure consistent narrative across e-blasts, fundraising materials, social media messaging, etc.
- Create and lead media communications plans for GGJ programs including member engagement, media presence, and orientation of spokespeople.
- Craft narrative strategy for sister organization GGJ Action Fund.
- Supervise Comms Staff and Coordinate Communications Team
- Supervise and Mentor Communications staff in comms strategy and implementation
- Lead weekly Communications Team meeting: create agendas & facilitate
- Supervise contractors: writers, graphic designers, video producers, printers as needed
- Oversee consistent documentation of activities for internal and external communication.
- Ensure summaries & reports of key programs for website, communications to members, supporters, funders and allies.
- Train and coach GGJ staff and members on messaging.
Lead external communications and coordinate consistent public profile (30%)
- Conceptualize and lead earned media strategies for GGJ and GGJ Action Fund
- Work with Co-Deputy Director, Organizational Strategy to craft public-facing narrative.
- Draft and circulate press releases and media advisories during high program periods.
- Work with Executive Director, staff, contractors and members to create media & press content (op-eds, press releases with quotes, talking points).
- Orient spokespeople for talking to press during programs.
- Pitch media outlets on doing interviews with members and staff on key topics
- Develop and maintain media relationships
- Maintain and grow database of media contacts.
- Develop a strategic plan for relationships with journalists, media outlets. (Identifying sector of media, key focus areas, etc.)
- Ensure consistent social media presence (coordinated with comms team members).
- Develop a plan and protocols for echoing member communications.
Represent GGJ/GGJAF in Key National and International Partnerships (15%)
- Bring GGJ/GGJAF perspective to movement spaces, and report back on a regular basis.
Ensure Robust Internal Communications Infrastructure (10%)
- Supervise & mentor Comms Organizer(s) to keep systems updated, accurate and clear, including collective comms calendar, website, e-blasts, social media presence, contact lists, staff comms systems.

Support to maintain shared internal digital systems (5%): files, receipts, finance forms, shared calendar, materials inventory, digital security protocols.

Participate in GGJ/GGJAF team (10%)
- Active and timely response on all communications (email, phone, texts, messaging apps)
- Attend weekly virtual meetings with staff, members and allies.
- Participate in and support preparation for quarterly in-person staff meetings, annual Coordinating Committee meetings, and other events as necessary.
- Compliance with GGJ remote working policies and procedures (calendaring, availability online, response time to communications, receipts, etc.)
Required Qualifications and Experience
- At least 7 years of experience with communications and at least 3 years supervision experience in US-based Black, Indigenous and people of color led grassroots base-building social justice organizations.
- Strong track record of managing a comprehensive strategic communications plan, including media relations, digital advocacy, and narrative strategy.
- Knowledge of national landscape of climate/environmental justice, familiarity and political alignment with some of the GGJ frameworks of Global Well-being, Just Transition, Grassroots Feminism, Grassroots Internationalism.
- Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with the ability to engage with diverse audiences, and tune into others’ feelings, thoughts, and motivations and earn trust by consistently demonstrating integrity, authenticity, and professional competence.
- Ability to work remotely, manage multiple work tasks, maintain attention to detail and accuracy, prioritization skills, and ability to identify and communicate items needing further attention.
- Ability to write and speak English language.
- Experience in multi-racial, multi-generational, multi-cultural settings.
- Knowledge of common computer applications: MS Office, Google docs, Dropbox, Adobe Suite, and Zoom video tele-conferencing systems.
- Familiarity with CRM systems and Database management (Powerbase).
- Experience using social media & web development tools: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WordPress.
- Ability to work flexible hours (evenings and weekends), including communicating with allies in other parts of the world in different time zones.
- Willingness to travel: average 5-10 days per month in the US, and 15 days per year internationally.
- Driver’s license and liability insurance.
- Ability to write and read additional language(s) besides English, preferably Spanish.
- Familiarity with relationship between 501c3 and 501c4 organizations, and experience coordinating between sibling 501c3 and 501c4 organizations.
