Job Title: Chief Campaigns Officer

Employment Status: Full-time exempt employee (40 hours per week)

Location: This is a remote position. We are a California-based organization, and this individual will be expected to work on a Pacific time zone schedule.

The Center for Cultural Power (Cultural Power) is a women of color, artist-led organization, inspiring artists and culture makers to imagine a world where power is distributed equitably and where we live in harmony with nature. We support artists through fellowships, training, and opportunities for activation. We create intersectional stories and content addressing issues of immigration, climate, gender and racial justice. We engage movement groups in cultural strategy and organize artists around issues that inspire them. Together with allies, we are co-creating a field of cultural strategy with organizations and practitioners through convenings, design teams, and strategy tables. Cultural Power is part of a family of organizations including The Cultural Engagement Lab (CEL) & The Constellations Culture Change Initiative & Fund. 

This position will lead campaigns at both Cultural Power and CEL, our 501(c)(4) organization that organizes a powerful network of seasoned artists and culture makers from impacted communities to lend their storytelling talents to meaningful advocacy, electoral, and civic engagement efforts. Who You Are

  • A political strategist and organizer who knows how to win campaigns and has a proven ability to build trust and collaborate with BIPOC-led organizations.
  • A collaborative leader who loves to manage teams, oversee campaigns, projects and experiments on narrative change, and believes in the power of artists.
  • A seasoned, culturally fluent leader with deep extensive leadership in state-based (or national/multi-state) legislative, political organizing, and/or issue campaigns.

Position Overview:

The Chief Campaigns Officer oversees the Intersectional Storytelling Department, which includes our gender justice & health equity , climate justice, and civic engagement/movement building programs. The Chief Campaigns officer also is absconded to CEL for a portion of their time, and directs the advocacy and electoral efforts of CEL, including strategic partnership development for state-based partnerships. The Chief Campaigns Officer designs, develops and oversees the implementation of a rigorous multi-million dollar intersectional storytelling portfolio at Cultural Power and civic engagement portfolio at CEL. Key responsibilities include, drafting strategy documents, creating annual targets, overseeing a complex budget, overseeing the completion of deliverables, and leading teams of full-time staff and contractors.

Program Design & Development:

  • Articulate strategy for intersectional storytelling and CEL by creating strategy documents and decks to drive development opportunities. Identify rapid response and fundraising opportunities and frame impact to respond to changes in the field.
  • Author creative briefs from core narratives and leading research for use in planned and responsive campaigns.
  •   Refine our approach to working with movement groups on campaigns and cultural strategy across Cultural Power and CEL
  • Lead the development of CEL’s multi-year strategy, this includes developing programming, timeline, personnel, short and long-term outcomes, and identifying state-based opportunities and targets.
  • Partner with the Communications team on designing effective distribution strategies that amplify our content and grow our audience.
  • Work in partnership with Development and Communications leadership to create a unified vision and methods to communicate impact and purpose.

Programmatic Oversight & Implementation:

  • Oversee the implementation of Intersectional Storytelling’s diverse portfolio of narrative strategy experiments in climate and gender justice, health equity, movement building and civic engagement. Ensure benchmarks and timelines are on track, strategy is aligned and innovations scaled across portfolios.
  • Oversee CEL programs and staff, including Program Coordinator, contractors and creatives. Ensure compliance as well as the budget and project schedule are on track.
  • Update and create annual outcomes for Intersectional Storytelling and CEL; refine and create annual work plans. Engage team in the development of project and program plans that align with strategic plans. Ensure that projects and programs are right sized and implementable in the development phase so that deliverables can be reached.
  • Oversee program reporting and assessment and partner with the learning and impact team on program evaluation. Create an environment of learning and inquiry with systems in place to share learning and articulate impact. Ensure that high level impact is shared with Leadership quarterly integrating qualitative and quantitative metrics.

Staff Supervision & Budgeting:

  • Supervise Intersectional Storytelling & CEL teams ensuring clear job descriptions and scopes of work. Provide performance feedback and coaching. Ensure that working norms and protocols are followed to foster a team environment of collaboration, care, learning, trust, and inspiration.
  • Manage teams to align on strategy and impact, meet deliverables, maintain timelines, adhere to and tag budget, and collaborate effectively, with an eye towards quality and innovation, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, output targets, and strategic plans.
  • Ensure that staff track artists, movement groups, and campaigns in Salesforce, submit expense reports, program reports, advocacy timesheets, and other reports on time and with accuracy.
  • Manage and implement the annual staff evaluation process for the Intersectional Storytelling team in alignment with HR’s best practices.

Leadership, Fundraising & Strategy:

  • Serve as an organization expert on narrative strategy in partnership with Chief Field Building Officer and VP to advance organizational and field goals.
  • Serve as a thought leader and ambassador for the organization.
    Partner with development on fundraising strategies; develop and maintain relationships with funders.
  • Support fundraising efforts through funder meetings, writing strategy documents, defining strategic objectives and providing narratives and reporting needs for grant proposals and reports.
  • Ensure that the President, VP and leadership team are informed of critical issues.
  • Contribute to building a vibrant organizational culture.

Timeline:

Ideally, we’d like to start the person in April 2022.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10+ years in campaign development, management and implementation with social justice organizations that serve BIPOC communities.
  • 5+ years managing teams, with a track record of creating collaborative, high performing, cross-functional teams.
  • 5+ years managing budgets $250k+
  • 5+ years of leadership in state-based (or national/multi-state) legislative, political organizing, and/or issue campaigns.
  • 2+ years designing and implementing narrative strategy programs in a campaign environment.
  • Expertise working in 501c3 & 501c4 entities
  • Experience with fundraising and relationships in the civic engagement and democracy landscape
  • Strong project management skills and ability to maintain high-level focus, delegating tasks while keeping momentum on projects.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Cultural fluency and direct experience working with BIPOC communities.
