The Good Food Institute is a nonprofit think tank working to make the global food system better for the planet, people, and animals. Alongside scientists, businesses, and policymakers, GFI’s teams focus on making plant-based and cultivated meat delicious, affordable, and accessible. Powered by philanthropy, GFI is an international network of organizations advancing alternative proteins as an essential solution needed to meet the world’s climate, global health, food security, and biodiversity goals.

How You Will Make a Difference 

As a Lead Web Developer, you will serve as the lead for the day-to-day technical development of the GFI U.S. and independent affiliate websites. The Lead Web Developer will be responsible for the following:

  • Maintaining GFI’s WordPress website through plugin and platform updates, bug fixes, and technical SEO improvements to support content creators and provide for optimal end-user experience.
  • Developing new and updating existing custom Gutenberg block functionality through well-designed, testable, and efficient code.
  • Developing new must-use plugins within GFI’s custom WordPress implementation using WordPress coding standards.
  • Staging new web pages, performing technical reviews, and maintaining web page content.
  • Supporting routine site audits and correlating technical fixes as required.
  • Collaborating with the broader IT team on related projects, including managing DNS and domains, building APIs, and code review and deployment.
  • Collaborating with a variety of individuals and teams across GFI, including Comms: Creative Team, Development Team, and content creators and strategists for assignments, prioritization, project direction, status, technical scope, and visual styling.
  • Directly managing one team member, delegating and collaborating on development projects and performing regular code reviews.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Who We’re Looking For

The Lead Web Developer must have:

  • Demonstrated web development experience, including a minimum of three years of professional WordPress development and administration experience with custom themes and 3rd party plugin integrations.
  • Fluency in PHP, HTML, Javascript (including strong jQuery and React knowledge), CSS (including SCSS), npm/Gulp, Git and Timber/ Twig templating required.
  • At least 1 year supervisory experience.
  • Experience developing Gutenberg custom blocks highly preferred.
  • Fluency in Linux/macOS command line (bash/zsh), SSH/SFTP, Gravity Forms, and SASS preferred.
  • Experience with phpMySql is a plus.
  • Experience with the Kinsta web hosting platform and the DevKinsta development tool are a plus.
  • Impeccable organization and attention to detail.
  • Basic knowledge of SEO best practices.
  • The ability to develop creative solutions independently, with a desire to collaborate with the Creative and program teams.
  • A swiss-army-like reserve of knowledge and tools to problem-solve creatively and efficiently.

An ideal candidate would also have:

  • Demonstrated experience consuming and developing APIs.
  • Familiarity with implementing web analytics (Google Analytics, Google Ads, Facebook Pixel etc.) tracking.
  • Demonstrated understanding of software development lifecycle best practices and experience managing and prioritizing a web projects pipeline.

The Fine Print

  • Position Type: Full Time, exempt
  • Reports to: Irina Rodina, Director of IT and Data Protection & Privacy Counsel
  • Location: Remote; United States
  • Travel: Up to two weeks per year for major GFI events and company retreats.

  • This is a U.S.-based position: In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
  • COVID vaccination policy: GFI requires all US employees to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination will be requested before the start of employment. GFI will consider requests for accommodations or exemptions from this policy on a case by case basis, in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Salary: $85,000-88,000 (depending on experience and qualifications)
